About this tour

Bike and Barge France: Seine Valley, Paris – Montargis or vice versa Premium | Fleur

There is no better way to begin an unforgettable 8-day bike and barge tour through the medieval towns, monasteries, abbeys and castles between Paris and Montargis than by standing at the stairs leading up to the magnificent Notre Dame cathedral in the heart of Paris.

Visit Fontainebleau castle, much-loved by French Kings of a bygone era due to its close proximity to the ancient woodland forests of the region and endless possibilities for hunting. You’ll cycle along quiet country roads to the painter’s village of Barbizon, the fortified medieval town of Moret-sur-Loing where Sisley drew inspiration for his magnificent impressionist paintings and the peaceful monastery of Ferrières, to name but a few.

Day to day program Paris to Montargis

Parts that are printed in italics parts will be covered by the ship.

All distances are “approximate distances” of recommended bike tours.

The planned itinerary is subject to change due to nautical, technical or meteorological reasons and other unforeseen circumstances. If there is low or high water and a route cannot be shipped, the captain reserves the right to change the route in view of your safety (this cannot be accepted as a reason for free withdrawal).

Day 1 (Saturday): Paris

The adventure begins with check-in at 2pm in the heart of Paris at the Quai de Bercy on the Seine river. After a warm welcome from the crew, captain and tour leader we’ll embark on a walking tour through Paris, followed by dinner on board and a briefing about the barge, bicycles and tour program.

Day 2 (Sunday): Paris – Evry | Evry – Melun  (30 km/19 mi.)

Day two begins with a leisurely breakfast onboard as we enjoy Paris in the best possible way, with a coffee in hand, sailing up the Seine at daybreak. The bike tour starts after lunch from the Evry lock and winds onward to Melun, a town which used to be the domain of the widows of French Kings.

Day 3 (Monday): Melun – Moret-sur-Loing (40 km/25 mi.)

You’ll start the third day of the tour with an invigorating morning cycle through the wonderous forests of Fontainebleau as you make your way to the artistic village of Barbizon, where the “Barbizon School” was formed by a group of landscape painters. Next up is the palace of Fontainebleau, which is home to a Napoleonic museum, among many other attractions which you’ll have time to explore. The barge docks in Moret-sur-Loing for the night a magnificent medieval fortified town where the painter Sisley lived and worked.

Day 4 (Tuesday): Moret-sur-Loing – Nemours (38 km/23 mi. or 51 km/31 mi.)

Today you’ll stay in the valley of the Loing and visit Grez-sur-Loing, home to countless artists in the early years of the 20th century. No visit to this region is complete without stopping at the town hall of Bourron-Marlotte to admire its magnificent impressionist paintings. You’ll reconnect with your barge, the Fleur in Nemours where relics of Gallo-Roman remains still stand. The castle here was built around 1120 and stands as a prehistoric museum of the Ile-de-France region.

Day 5 (Wednesday): Nemours – Néronville (35 km/22 mi. or 45 km/27 mi.)

Another leisurely breakfast spent sailing before you embark on the day’s cycling, eventually reaching the “Jardin Bourdelle” sculpture garden before lunch. Here, you’ll admire the artist Antoine Bourdelle’s 57 bronze monumental sculptures. You’ll lunch in Egréville, which has been an important commercial crossroads for hundreds of years, before reaching our final destination, rural Néronville

Day 6 (Thursday): Néronville – Montargis (30 km/18 mi. or 41 km/26 mi.)

En route to Montargis today, you’ll cycle to Chateau-Landon, with the humble 13th century Abbey of St Séverin, the medieval town of Ferrières with its old, but beautifully-preserved town centre and splendid old monastery, eventually reaching Montargis in late afternoon which, though it only has 15,000 inhabitants is still the biggest town of the Loiret, after Orléans. Unfortunately a raging fire destroyed this former royal residence in the 16th century, but the canals, beautifully decorated with flowers, lend the town an undeniable charm. Today there is no dinner on board, so you’re free to choose a local Montargis restaurant to dine with your fellow cycling friends.

Day 7 (Friday): Montargis (45 km/28 mi.)

On today’s round-trip, you’ll cycle from Montargis to Château-Renard, to visit the ruins of a 10th century castle, followed by a fascinating visit to an Apiculture’s Living Museum. Here, you’ll not only see beekeepers and their bees at work, but you’ll also be able to sample their delicious honey. You’ll return long the river Ouanne to Montargis for the night.

Day 8 (Saturday): Montargis

With fond farewells you’ll enjoy your last breakfast together with disembarkation running up until 9:30am.

Day 1 (Sat): Montargis

Embarkation and check-in at 2 p.m. in Montargis. After a welcome by the captain, crew and tour leader there is time for bicycle fitting and a short test ride.

After dinner your tour leader will take you for a walk through Montargis, the second-largest town of the Loiret region, after Orléans.  Unfortunately this former royal residence was destroyed by a big fire in the 16th century. But the canals are still there. They are decorated with many flowers and give the town a lot of charm.

Day 2 (Sun): Montargis  (45 km/28 mi.)

After breakfast you will cycle from Montargis to Château-Renard, where you can visit the ruins of a castle from the 10th century. You will also visit an Apiculture’s Living Museum. There you can see beekeepers and their bees at work, and you’ll be able to sample their delicious honey. Along the river Ouanne you will return to Montargis.

Day 3 (Mon): Montargis – lock of Cepoy | lock of Cepoy – Néronville (39 km/24 mi. or 46 km/28 mi.)

Breakfast while sailing to the lock of Cepoy. Your bicycle tour goes along the river Loing. First stop is the medieval town of Ferrières with its old town center, which has been preserved beautifully. And in the middle of the narrow streets you find a splendid monastery. After this you cycle to Egréville. This village has been an important commercial crossroads for hundreds of years. Its markets and fairs enjoyed great renown. You will also visit the sculpture garden “Jardin Bourdelle”. In this garden you can admire some 57 bronze monumental sculptures by the artist Antoine Bourdelle. Final destination of today is rural Néronville.

Day 4 (Tue):  Néronville – Nemours (29 km/18 mi. or 43 km/26 mi.)

Our route today is through an area that was already cultivated in the Gallo-Roman era. First stop is the old Gallic stronghold Château-Landon, a beautifully situated fortified  town on a rock. Its Abbey of St.-Séverin dates from the 13th century. Later on you find the rocks of Nemours on your way and you meet the Fleur again in Nemours. Nemours is supposed to derive its name from the woods (“nemora”) in the midst of which it formerly stood  and discoveries of Gallo-Roman remains indicate its early origin. The castle, erected around 1120, now is a prehistoric museum of the Ile-de-France region.

Day 5 (Wed): Nemours – Moret-sur-Loing (32 km/19 mi. or 46 km/28 mi.)

Today you stay in the valley of the Loing river. First you will visit Grez-sur-Loing where many artist used to live in the early years of the 20th century. Then you will continue to Bourron-Marlotte. In the town hall you can admire a few magnificent impressionist paintings. You will stay overnight in Moret-sur-Loing. This is a charming medieval fortified town, strategically situated on the banks of the Loing, where painter Sisley found inspiration for his beautiful impressionist paintings.

Day 6 (Thu): Moret-sur-Loing – Melun (40 km/25 mi.)

Today you will cycle through the wonderful forests of Fontainebleau. First destination is the city of Fontainebleau, with its magnificent palace, much in favor among the French kings, because of the extensive possibilities to hunt in the surrounding forests. The castle houses a museum dedicated to Napoleon. Fontainebleau is also a pleasant town to walk around or to shop. After this, you will continue to the artistic village of Barbizon, where since the first half of the 19th century many painters have found inspiration. A group of landscape painters founded  the “Barbizon School”. You can visit the local museum. Final destination of your bicycle tour is Melun, a town which is known as “le domaine des reines blanches”, because in former years it used to be the domain of the widows of the French kings. Today there is no dinner on board. You can select one of the local restaurants in town.

Day 7 (Fri): Melun – lock of Evry  | lock of Evry – Paris (31 km/19 mi.)

You are getting near to Paris, which means you have to deal with a bit more traffic. In the morning you can enjoy short bicycle ride, following the river banks of the Seine river to the lock of Evry, from where you will join the Fleur, to sail  into Paris. Lunch on board. The mooring place of the Fleur is in the center of Paris, not far from the Notre Dame. After dinner you can join the tour leader for a city walk.

Day 8 (Sat): Paris

End of your tour: Disembarkation after breakfast until 9.30 a.m.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip on the Fleur from Paris to Montargis at the end of July. In spite of the heat our guides found cool biking trails by the river and canal as well as entertaining and educational stops. It was a blast as we met wonderful people from other countries and languages. The food was wonderful as was the hospitality of the boat captain, and crew. We have beautiful photos of the French countryside and Paris to remember our trip and fond memories of the people we met and the places we visited. The accommodations were perfect in every way, very clean and comfortable and the bikes were well maintained. Thank you to the boat crew and guides who worked so hard to make our trip so memorable. We would absolutely love to do another trip in the future. Richard and Jane Weigle

I can only speak for the boat we were on – Fleur – but we were made very welcome. The air conditioned cabins are comfortable with plenty of storage and efficient ensuite shower rooms. All is kept spotlessly clean. The food was plentiful, varied and good. The staff all went out of their way to be friendly and helpful. I accept that we may have just struck lucky with our tour guides, skipper and crew but any emails to Jossie in the office were answered quickly, efficiently and politely. The organisation for the whole week on board exceeded expectations – a view which I know was shared with our fellow passengers. Of course, the hot sunny weather helped!
